Nutritional Shakes – By request from some of our members, we will be offering some easy-to-prepare recipes from time-to-time.  Here are some shakes that may be helpful for snacking or light meal replacement, with most providing essential protein.

Meal or snack options:

· 1 cup sliced apple, 1 cup apple juice, 1 cup lemon yogurt, ½ tsp. cinnamon.  Process in blender until smooth.  You may add a cup or two of ice for a cool treat.

· 1 ripe banana, peach or nectarine, peeled and cut in chunks, ½ cup milk or yogurt, 1 tsp. honey or other sweetener, 1 tsp. wheat germ or unprocessed bran.  Combine in blender or food processor until smooth.

· 1 banana peeled and sliced, ½ cup plain yogurt, 2 tblsp. honey, 2 tblsp. peanut butter, ¾ cup milk.  Combine in blender or food processor until smooth.

· 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, 1 cup orange juice, 1 peeled banana cut in chunks, 1 cup ice.  Process in blender until smooth.  Using frozen fruit will provide a sorbet-like texture.  Serves 2 or refrigerate leftovers.

· 1 cup milk, 1 large peach, peeled and cut, 5 ice cubes, 2 tblsp. brown sugar, ¼ tsp. almond extract.  Process in blender until smooth and foamy.  Blueberries are also good in this recipe.

· 1 ½ cups milk, 1 cup frozen or regular raspberry yogurt, 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries, 2 tblsp. honey.  Process in blender until smooth – yields 4 cups.

· Combine the following in saucepan – 1 tblsp. sugar, ½ tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. nutmeg, 2 cups milk, 1 tsp. vanilla extract.  Heal sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and milk until hot, then add vanilla.  You may use a beater to make it foamy.  Yields two cups.

Post-Polio Syndrome tidbits– Post-polio syndrome not only affects people who had paralytic polio, but it is also found in those who were diagnosed with non-paralytic polio.

A clinical trial on PPS fatigue is underway through the Jackson Foundation in Bethesda, Maryland to test if the medication modafinil can help reduce the fatigue in PPS patients.

Among the PPS symptoms, fatigue is usually the earliest and often the most debilitating.  Other symptoms include increasing muscle weakness, atrophy, muscle and joint pain, disabling fatigue, and cold intolerance.
